Business mobility is key driver in CIO spend this year

By Kevin Norton, Mobility Solutions Director at Westcongroup Southern Africa

According to Gartner’s Worldwide IT spending forecast of Q3 2015, CIOs will increase the amount of IT budget dedicated to digital business technologies in 2016. This brings to mind the question of what increasing digitisation means for business mobility. Would mobility in businesses as we know it today exist without digital technology? Not a chance. So then, can a business be digital without mobility? No way.

An article on huffingtonpost.com highlights seven lessons about digital business transformation from one of the top digital business thought leaders, Mike Sutcliff. The first and foremost lesson is that “Mobility is an element of all digital transformation initiatives”.

Which means that in order to achieve a truly digital business, CIOs will need to increase their spending on mobile technologies and business solutions in the coming year.

Sutcliff is a supporter of a mobile-first or even mobile-only world and backs up his reasoning for this in the article saying, “Today we have about six billion people on the planet, about 4 billion have mobile technology and five to seven billion ‘things’ are connected. All of these numbers will explode in the next couple of years. We think that we will add nine billion connections to the Internet next year [2016]. We will see a massive shift in what the technology enables us to do in the next 12-18 months.”

What these predictions highlight is that when people think about changing the way they are working they think mobility whereas when a business needs digitising the primary resort is digital technology, but really the two go hand in hand in creating a truly digital business. With that in mind businesses looking to keep pace with competitors in 2016 should be evaluating how far they are terms of becoming a digital business, and begin taking the steps that will push them there.
