Leveraging cloud to achieve success in Bimodal IT

By Leane Hannigan, cloud solutions director at Westcon-Comstor Southern Africa

Businesses have from the start, shied away from cloud because although it holds great promise for transforming – and more importantly improving – the way business is done, it is ultimately a disruptor. And though it’s been around for a while, Gartner’s Bimodal IT is still a challenge facing many companies today as they are pushed to innovate at a faster rate than ever before, while still putting pressure on IT to keep the lights on.

Bimodal IT is made up of two modes. The first is focused on reliability, which refers to keeping things running smoothly within the business and the second focuses on agility, together these two modes make up this concept, and refer to a company’s ability to keep the lights on while also innovating.

There is definitely something to be said for the cloud and how it can help companies achieve success in Bimodal IT. Cloud is absolutely an innovation enabler because with the cloud, IT departments can let go of their obsession with hardware and adopt a more agile approach to business. And if they aren’t bogged down by the maintenance of hardware, it frees up more time for innovation.

Cloud means that businesses can buy space in a data centre as opposed to more infrastructure which means IT can execute things faster and be more agile. What all of that flexibility ultimately means is that IT will be able to keep the lights on and innovate in the business simultaneously.

This technology is not about risk, it’s about finding stability and agility in one investment because it will allow you to change the way you do business so that you can ensure you stay ahead of competitors as you adjust to the new digital era that business is moving towards, and cloud is without a doubt a massive part of that.
