The new face of security

The definition of network ‘security’ is changing with the emergence of each new end-user device and of course with trends like BYOE, business mobility and the IoT. Securing your business network in the modern IT landscape is no longer just a case of securing your perimeter. No, in fact it is about protecting your endpoint and your endpoint is wherever your end-user may be sitting and working on a mobile, tablet or laptop, be it in the office or halfway across the globe.

Gartner has predicted that risk-based security and self-prediction will part of the top 10 technology trends for 2015. All roads to the digital future lead through security but in a digital business world, security cannot be a roadblock that stops all progress. According to Gartner companies will increasingly realise that it is not possible to create a 100% secured environment and once they acknowledge this they will begin to apply more sophisticated risk assessment and mitigation tools.

Businesses need to recognise that perimeter defence is inadequate and applications need to take a more active role in security.  Security-aware application design, dynamic and static application security testing and runtime application self- protection combined with active context-aware and adaptive access controls are all needed in today’s dangerous digital world.

Gartner believes that this will lead to new models of building security directly into applications as perimeters and firewalls alone simply will not cut it. Every application will need to be self-aware and self-protecting if an enterprise wants to have a hope of protecting its data.
